BST guide to this week’s early MLB games: 26 to choose from

by Matt Smith

CovHlSqIt’s the first working week of games in the 2011 MLB season and we start with a bumper crop of ‘early’ games: that is games that begin before midnight UK time.

Normally there will be one day, possibly two, in the working week when there are no early games and we will have around 10 games spread out over those days to choose from.

However, as the season is just getting underway, we’ve got early games every day this week and 26 games in total.  That makes for lots of games to enjoy live at a convenient time for us in the UK.

Monday 4 April

19.10. Atlanta at Milwaukee (Beachy – Narveson) * ESPN America
19.20. Arizona at Chicago Cubs (Enright – Wells)
20.05. Detroit at Baltimore (Porcello – Arrieta)

There are six games in the Majors on Monday and three take place during the daytime.  D-Backs and Cubs fans can enjoy all three games of their series, the Braves-Brewers game is on ESPN American, and Jake Arrieta pitches the home opener at Camden Yards.

Tuesday 5 April

19.20. Arizona at Chicago Cubs (Galarraga – Cashner)
23.35. San Francisco at San Diego (Bumgarner – Harang)
23.40. L.A. Angels at Tampa Bay (Weaver – Niemann)

The second game of the D-Backs-Cubs series is the only true early game on Tuesday, with the other two beginning close to midnight.  Andrew Cashner won the last spot in the Cubs’ rotation and he makes his season debut in this one against former Tiger Armando Galarraga.

Wednesday 6 April

18.10. L.A. Angels at Tampa Bay (Haren – Hellickson) * ESPN America
18.45. Pittsburgh at St. Louis (Correia – Carpenter)
19.05. Seattle at Texas (Hernandez – Wilson)
19.10. Chicago White Sox at Kansas City (Buehrle – Francis)
19.20. Arizona at Chicago Cubs (Kennedy – Dempster)
20.10. L.A. Dodgers at Colorado (Billingsley – Rogers)
23.35. San Francisco at San Diego (Lincecum – Stauffer)

Take your pick from this promising selection of games.  The Haren-Hellickson match up is a great way to start the evening’s action, while watching King Felix taking on the thumping Texas batting lineup should be a real treat.  Chris Carpenter, Chad Billingsley and Tim Lincecum are fun pitchers to watch too.

Thursday 7 April

17.05. Boston at Cleveland (Lester – Carmona)
17.35. Houston at Cincinnati (Myers – LeCure)
17.37. Oakland at Toronto (Cahill – Romero)
18.05. Minnesota at NY Yankees (Liriano – Burnett)
18.35. Colorado at Pittsburgh (Jimenez – Maholm)
18.40. Atlanta at Milwaukee (Hanson – Marcum)
19.10. Tampa Bay at Chicago White Sox (Price – Jackson)
20.05. NY Mets at Philadelphia (Niese – Halladay) * ESPN America

There is another good group of games on Thursday.  Fausto Carmona doesn’t need to be facing the Red Sox after his horror show in his first start of the season, but that’s the card he’s been dealt.  There were plenty of rumours about the Yankees looking to trade for Francisco Liriano over the offseason, so it will be interesting to see how he does against them for the Twins.  Edwin Jackson takes on one of his former teams at the Cell, while a Roy Halladay start is always worth watching.

Friday 8 April

19.05. NY Yankees at Boston (Hughes – Lackey) * ESPN America
20.05. Kansas City at Detroit (Davies – Scherzer)
21.10. Oakland at Minnesota (Anderson – Blackburn)
21.10. Washington at NY Mets (Zimmermann – Dickey)
21.35. St. Louis at San Francisco (Westbrook – Sanchez)

Start your weekend off with one or more of these early games, including the first Yankees-Red Sox game of the season and a start by the Mets’ knuckleballer R.A. Dickey.

All of these games are available to watch live via the MLB.TV subscription at MLB.com.  The early games being shown on ESPN America are highlighted above, while the ESPN/ESPN America schedule can be found on their website.  The full schedule for this week’s games can be found on MLB.com.

We’ve been treated to some good early games this week and Friday’s games are shaping up to be just as exciting. Yes, ESPN’s obsession with Yankees-Red Sox can get tiresome, but that’s going to be a fascinating game. Boston at 0-6 and a day-game home opener against their bitter rivals: it couldn’t be set up any better.

Is this exactly the challenge that the Red Sox need, or are the Yankees going to make things even worse for them?

Think you need a new post category, Matt: “Guide to this week’s games that are so late you can watch them over breakfast”. I know this has happened before – perhaps most famously, for Brits at least, with that marathon 18-inning postseason broadcast on Five a few years back that went on till something like 07:30.

But I’ve already had breakfast and washed the dishes, and they’re still playing in San Diego. Think there must have been some rain.

The fact this game is tied in the 9th at the moment means this could go on to give me something to do while eating lunch. There must be a cut-off, though, right? Maybe they’e more lenient because it’s not running over into a work day in San Diego.
