BaseballGB Fantasy League 2011: Week Two

by Mark George

BgbFantasyHeadlineWelcome to our weekly round-up of the BaseballGB Fantasy League competition.  This is a mixed Head-2-Head league involving BGB writers and readers.

There are fourteen teams who pair up in different combinations each week, making for seven match-ups in any given week. The teams battle over twelve statistical categories, gaining one point for each category they win.

All the points are carried over into the season league table at the end of the weekly match-ups. The top six teams with the most points at the end of the fantasy season will go on to the playoffs during the last three weeks of September.

Week two of the Baseball GB fantasy league saw teams do battle over seven days after an extended start to the season. But which teams are off to flying starts and which managers are waiting for their teams to get going?

We begin with a big win for the Sox, who used some Sunday heroics to get the better of the Stuff 8-2. Strong outings from Trevor Cahill and Matt Kemp’s walkoff homer helped the Sox take homers, OPS, ERA and WHIP and draw level in RBIs. Aramis Ramirez and Kyle McClellan also had very good weeks. The Stuff had offense from Holliday and Teixeira and plenty of nice pitching from Hamels and Billingsley, but neither could add to Haren’s two wins.

In the matchup of Yankees fan v Red Sox fan, it was the New Yorkers who came out on top 7-5. The Yankees had seven different players homer at least once and Desmond’s three steals came in handy. The pitching staff took four of the six categories thanks to Cain, Soriano, Street and Rivera. The Bet had plenty of runs from Rasmus, while Freese and Ethier also had big weeks. Bell and Halladay helped the pitching staf take ERA and WHIP.

Dave just got the better of JJ 7-5 in another close matchup. In the end it was the pitchers who made the difference, as Jon Lester’s nice week helped Dave take wins, strikeouts, ERA and WHIP in very closely fought categories. Some guy named Pujols also had a big week with the bat. Fuentes and new Twins closer Capps helped JJ take saves, while Adams had two holds and Bourn was the star hitter with eight runs and five steals.

Iron Men 23 4 19 1 0.251 0.711 7 4 27 0 2.25 0.86 5

Matt’s Chasers provided a clean sweep of offensive categories on the way to a 7-5 win against Iron Men, with Tulo, Stubbs and Sandoval all having multi-homer weeks. A hold from Meek proved vital, as Iron Men took the five remaining pitching categories thanks to Pineda, Weaver, Marcum and Valverde. The stingy ERA and WHIP from Iron Men’s staff was very impressive.

Redbacks 26 5 26 4 0.2 0.57 3 2 31 1 1.99 0.91 4

Talking of impressive ERA and WHIP, Redbacks also put up stingy numbers, but a lack of offense cost them in a narrow 6-4 loss to the Angels. Johnson, Pavano and Davis all contributed to a sub-2.00 ERA and sub-1.00 WHIP, but lost out to the strikeouts of Lee and Hanson. Bautista and Alexei Ramirez provided power and speed as the Angels took four of the six offensive categories.

Pretzel Vendors 23 3 24 3 0.243 0.665 1 4 44 4 4.47 1.35 5

My Isotopes suffered another defeat, this time losing 5-4 to the Vendors in one of the closest matchups I can remember. Neither side could be separated in runs, homers and steals, with the Vendors taking RBIs by two and average by nine points thanks to Beltre’s big Sunday. The Vendors’ bullpen of Wilson, Clippard and Sipp also collected four saves and four holds. My pitchers managed to take wins, strikeouts and ERA thanks to Kershaw and Chacin. The return of Sizemore and Ubaldo cannot come quickly enough for my team.

Last, but by no means least, we have a 5-5 tie in the matchup between SWAT and Bonestalkers. SWAT had the edge in homers, average and OPS thanks to Castro and Posey, but Bonestalkers had the edge in RBIs and racked up 11 steals thanks to Reyes, Michael Young and CarGo. The pitching stats saw Bonestalkers take wins and strikeouts thanks to Myers, while SWAT had the edge in saves and ERA thanks to Walden, Marmol and Zimmermann. Just 0.01 separated the teams in WHIP.
