MLB on 5 Live Sports Extra: Giants at Nationals

by Matt Smith

Mlb5XtraHlThis evening’s game on BBC 5 Live Sports Extra is a clash from the U.S. capital.

The Giants (13-13) and Nationals (12-14) have split the first two games of their four-game series, and if today’s game carries on in the same way as those two, it will be a low-scoring affair.

Washington and San Francisco enter today’s game in the bottom third of the run-scoring chart (25th and 26th respectively) and the two teams have combined for just six runs so far in this series.

Jason Marquis shut-out the Giants on Friday night as the Nationals took the opener 3-0, while the winning run in Saturday’s 2-1 victory for the Giants came courtesy of a bases-loaded walk rather than a solid hit.

Both teams are also playing without their regular third baseman.  Pablo Sandoval’s off-season fitness regime was paying off handsomely and he was batting .313/.374/.530 with five homers until breaking a bone in his right hand and landing on the Disabled List yesterday.

Ryan Zimmerman was carrying on his traditional role of  leading the Nationals’ offence until succumbing to an abdominal tear that now requries surgery.  Both are expected to be out of action for the next six weeks.

Matt Cain and Jordan Zimmermann are the scheduled starters for today’s game.  Cain hasn’t quite hit top form through his first five starts this season, but is one of the best in the National League when he is on his game.  Zimmermann is still feeling his way back from Tommy John surgery after returning to a Major League mound for seven starts at the end of last season.

Nat Coombs and Josh Chetwynd will be on air from 18.00 with first pitch set for 18.35. Be part of the show by joining the Facebook group page and posting your comments and questions.
