BST guide to this week’s early MLB games: Every day except for Monday

by Matt Smith

CovHlSqIt’s set to be a good week of early starts in MLB.

All days but Monday offer us at least one game beginning before midnight and there is plenty of choice on Wednesday (nine early games) and on Thursday (six).  All times are in BST.

Monday 23 May

No early games

Tuesday 24 May

20.10. Arizona at Colorado (Saunders – De La Rosa)

We start our working week of live baseball in Denver.  The Rockies missed out on Interleague play over the weekend as they faced the Milwaukee Brewers in the NL-only part of the schedule.  Familiarity didn’t help Colorado as they were swept by the Brew Crew.

Meanwhile the D-Backs swept the Minnesota Twins to make it six wins on the spin.  That left Arizona just half a game behind the Rockies in the NL West prior to this series.

Wednesday 25 May

17.05. Boston at Cleveland (Lester – TBA)
17.35. Atlanta at Pittsburgh (Minor – McDonald)
18.05. Tampa Bay at Detroit (Sonnanstine – Penny) * ESPN America
18.05. Toronto at NY Yankees (Reyes – Garcia)
18.10. Washington at Milwaukee (Marquis – Greinke)
18.10. Seattle at Minnesota (Bedard – Duensing)
19.05. Chicago White Sox at Texas (Floyd – Wilson)
19.05. LA Dodgers at Houston (Lilly – Rodriguez)
23.35. St. Louis at San Diego (Carpenter – Latos)

There’s plenty of choice on Wednesday.  It will be fascinating to see how Cleveland match up against the Red Sox in this series and Wednesday’s game will be the finale.  Zack Greinke makes his fifth start of the season for the Brewers, presumably against Jason Marquis who had a temper tantrum after being taken out of Friday’s game against the Orioles.

Erik Bedard has pitched extremely well of late and the M’s will be hoping he can keep on the mound after several injury ravaged years.  It’s Aneury Rodriguez pitching for the Astros rather than Wandy, while there’s no clarification needed for the latest game to start. Carpenter and Latos should combine to make for an excellent pitching contest at Petco.

Thursday 26 May

17.35. Kansas City at Baltimore (Francis – Bergesen)
18.05. Boston at Detroit (Aceves – Scherzer) * ESPN America (possibly)
18.05. Cincinnati at Philadelphia (Bailey – Lee) * ESPN America (possibly)
19.20. NY Mets at Chicago Cubs (Dickey – Davis)
20.35. Oakland at LA Angels (Anderson – Pineiro)
20.45. Florida at San Francisco (Sanchez – Vogelsong)

There are only eight games scheduled to be played on Thursday and all but two will be early starts. The game being shown on ESPN America will be determined by a poll on their website and either would be a good match-up.

The prospect of a Cliff Lee start might push some towards that encounter, yet if Boston’s fan base wins the day then we should have the chance to watch Max Scherzer.  He was handed his first loss of the season last time out, but has been outstanding for the Tigers and is developing into a genuine frontline starter.

Elsewhere, Jeff Francis will look to build on his excellent performance against the Cardinals last Friday, while the combination of R.A. Dickey’s knuckleball and a windy Wrigley could make for a very interesting game.

Friday 27 May

19.20. Pittsburgh at Chicago Cubs (Karstens – Zambrano) * ESPN America

The Cubs give us a great way to start the Bank Holiday weekend with an early game on Friday.  This would be Carlos Zambrano’s scheduled spot and he’s always an entertaining pitcher to watch, whether he’s pitching well or not.  Add in the Buccos’ group of young players and it should be a good one.

All of these games are available to watch live via the MLB.TV subscription at MLB.com.  The early games being shown on ESPN America are highlighted above, while the ESPN/ESPN America schedule can be found on their website.  The full schedule for this week’s games can be found on MLB.com.
