BaseballGB Fantasy League 2011: Week Nine

by Mark George

BgbFantasyHeadlineWelcome to our weekly round-up of the BaseballGB Fantasy League competition. This is a mixed Head-2-Head league involving BGB writers and readers.

There are fourteen teams who pair up in different combinations each week, making for seven match-ups in any given week. The teams battle over twelve statistical categories, gaining one point for each category they win.

All the points are carried over into the season league table at the end of the weekly match-ups. The top six teams with the most points at the end of the fantasy season will go on to the playoffs during the last three weeks of September.

In a week where plenty of teams were playing their neighbours in the standings it was no surprise to see some very close matchups in the BaseballGB fantasy league. Here’s how the teams got on in Week Nine:

Beck ‘Nams (GB) 32 4 25 13 0.26 0.73 2 0 36 3 5.09 1.54 4
Okajima’s Fire Bet 35 7 31 3 0.236 0.754 3 5 33 2 2.7 0.98 8

The Bet were the biggest winners, defeating Beck ‘Nams 8-4. While Margaret’s side struggled to hit for average, there were plenty of RBIs from Smoak, Rasmus, Boesch, Cabrera and Ethier. Halladay and Vargas led the pitching staff to take wins, ERA and WHIP while Bell had four saves. Konerko and Torres had good weeks for JJ’s team, as did Bourn, who stole an incredible seven bases in seven days.

Redbacks just got the better of Bonestalkers in this tight matchup. Andrus and Stanton helped Redbacks take four offensive categories, while the bullpen of League and Venters took saves and holds. Bonestalkers benefitted from Huff’s three-homer game and six different players stole bases. Latos appears to be back on track with a pair of wins.

Kemp and Kelly Johnson each hit four homers as the hitters won four categories, while the pitching categories were shared with two wins apiece and two ties. Pujols had a big week with the bat for Dave, as did Rajai Davis, while Colon won his two starts.

The Yankees got the better of my Isotopes 6-4, with nine categories which could have gone either way. Justin Upton, Butler and Beltran gave the Yankees the edge in steals, average and OPS, while Felix Hernandez and Chamberlain made the difference in ERA, WHIP and holds. Crawford, Walker, Pence and Hosmer gave my team plenty of runs, homers and RBIs while Carpenter racked up the strikeouts but had no wins to show for it.

CJ Wilson and Zambrano racked up plenty of strikeouts and helped take ERA and WHIP. Teixeira had a three-homer week for the Stuff, while Billingsley won both his starts and Isringhausen picked up the only hold of the matchup.
