After an opening week stretched across 10 days and two continents, it’s time to see who has got off to a good start and who is still finding their feet in the BaseballGB fantasy league.

Richie RBIs are the early pacesetters after beating the Angels 10-2. The Angels failed to reach the 20 inning minimum limit, giving Richie all of the pitching categories, and injuries to Carpenter and Farnsworth haven’t helped. Carlos Pena and Cespedes each had 7 RBIs. Bonifacio stole three bases for the Angels.

Carlos Santana and Joyce provided power for the Chasers, while Betancourt and Pestano took care of saves and holds.

The Angels got the better of Beck ‘Nams in a tight matchup, sweeping the offensive categories thanks to Miguel Cabrera and Ethier each having 8 RBIs and Castro stealing four bases. JJ’s team rebounded with good starts from Harrison, Halladay, Niese and Wandy Rodriguez, while Putz and Papelbon combined for three saves.

There wasn’t much offense on show in this matchup as the Sox edged past the Stuff 5-4. Five different Sox hitters went deep, with Cuddyer the pick of the bunch. Hanson and McCarthy helped take ERA. Bruce had three homers for the Stuff, Francisco picked up three saves in a row and Santana and Wainwright returned from injury to help take strikeouts.

Pontypridd Pirates 15 3 14 3 0.3 0.82 0 3 16 0 3.66 1.17 6

The Pirates also failed to reach the 20-inning minimum against Boyd’s Base On Balls but this matchup ended all square as Avila, Hamiloton and Daniel Murphy helped Pontypridd sweep the offensive categories, while Verlander and Lester pitched well for Margaret.

The stretched schedule didn’t help some teams in the opening week, especially if a number of your starting pitchers were not due to pitch until after the opening matchup, but hopefully I won’t be typing about the minimum inning rule for a while.

Don’t forget to use the DL for your injured players, freeing up a roster spot for a replacement, and to look at other teams in case there is a potential to strengthen your team through a trade.

Here are the week two fixtures:
Richie’s RBIs v Beck ‘Nams
Isotopes v Chasers
Bolts v Pirates
Angels v Vendors
Yankees v Anglers
Bonestalkers v Expats
SWAT v YD33s
Stuff v daebhid2
Iron Men v Super Sox
Boyd’s Base On Balls v Riverkings

A few days in and the injury bug has already struck, with Fister and Stauffer out. Doesn’t help when you accidentally leave a starter on the bench when he gets a win either (R.A. Dickey in my case). Must. Do. Better!

Really enjoyed my first fantasy baseball week. Was gutted I fell foul of the 20 inning rule, especially as I was one out away from 20. I knew I didn’t like Ozzie Guillen for lots of reasons, and him pulling Zambrano after 6 just increased my hatred. An 8-2 win snatched away. Never mind though, onwards and upwards.

Hi Gareth. We’ve all probably missed the 20 inning mark at one time or another (I know I have, but I’m not the best example to follow in any case!); however your example was an especially harsh way to fall foul of it.

I don’t know: if Ozzie’s not causing outrage with comments about dictators, he’s messing up people’s fantasy teams.

Better luck this week
Matt

Thanks Matt,
I am now obsessed by the innings pitched column! And I know I should be more concerned about Ozzie’s Castro comments but fantasy baseball does funny things to you! I am loving it though and really glad I joined. I’m finding myself switching to games with my players in them all the time on MLB.TV. I have never fist-pumped following an Alex Avila RBI triple before.
Cheers
Gareth
