The standard Bank Holiday weekend weather has taken hold on many parts of the U.K., so if your outdoor plans for the day went by the wayside then why not cheer yourself up in the evening with some MLB action.
The Los Angeles Angels are on a charge and now sit only 3.5 games behind the Texas Rangers in the AL West following their 3-2 victory on Saturday. It wasn’t the best-played game of either team’s season so far, and the umpires seemed to get dragged down by that as well, but the Angels will not care one bit. They go for the series sweep with Dan Haren on the mound today.
Elsewhere, Miguel Cabrera went deep twice yesterday as the Tigers evened up their series with the Yankees at 1-1. Justin Verlander, who had a rare average start last time out against the Red Sox (5 earned runs over 6 innings), is on the hill for the series decider.
Stephen Strasburg pitched seven scoreless innings as the Nationals beat the Braves 2-0 on Saturday and Gio Gonzalez will look to continue where his rotation mate left off in today’s game. The Mariners snapped the White Sox’s winning streak at nine games with a victory yesterday; however Chicago has left-hander Chris Sale on the mound today hoping to start another winning streak straight away. Sale struck out 15 in his most recent appearance.
Meanwhile, there will be plenty of pressure on the Mets’ Jon Niese in the sole late game against the Cardinals. He has a lot to live up to after Johan Santana’s no-hitter on Friday and R.A. Dickey’s complete game shut-out yesterday.
