Gameday analysis

by Matt Smith

As I write this post, there are seven games being played (the Marlins have just finished beating the Dodgers). Nothing beats watching the action, but in those hours during the day when we don’t have that luxury there are plenty of interesting web articles to devour. Recently there has been a marked increase in the amount of detailed analysis into biomechanics and, in particular, a focus on pitchers.

Anyway, the new Enhanced Gameday at MLB.com is proving to be a stunning source of data for people who want to take a detailed look at pitchers. Dan Fox at Baseball Prospectus has published an article today all about Phil Hughes’s recent start against the Rangers which gives a good insight into how the Gameday info can be used. I would also recommend reading the two Joe P. Sheehan articles referenced at the end of Dan’s introduction (especially if you are curious as to how exactly you can get this data as well).

This sort of info won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, but that’s the beauty of there being so much diverse content to explore. If you are interested in this type of work then there’s plenty to look at (and scope for you to try and put together some findings yourself). If not, well there are many, many more topics for you to explore. It’s all in the name of enjoying baseball and trying to learn a little bit more about this great sport.
