A great week for sports fans

by Matt Smith

We’ve got another England football qualifier this week as well as the Rugby World Cup, the inaugural Twenty20 World Cup, and the NFL. But there’s still plenty of time for baseball! Here’s my list of games you can follow live during the British evening this week (all times in BST).

Monday – One early game and it’s an important clash from the NL Central. The Cardinals face the Cubs at Wrigley with Joel Pineiro and Ted Lilly taking the mound at 20.20.

Tuesday – The Tigers are chasing the Yankees for the AL wild card and a double-header with the Rangers is a handy opportunity to gain some ground. Vicente Padilla is scheduled to make the start for Texas in the early match-up, which bodes well for Detroit! First pitch is 18.05. Later on, Phil Hughes is scheduled to start for the Yanks against the Blue Jays (00.07) while the Braves and the Mets continue their series with El Duque pitching for the “Amazin’s” (00.10).

Wednesday – Four early games today. From the National League, the Brewers face the Pirates (17.35) and the Nats compete in the NL East cellar match with the Marlins (18.05). The other two games see four teams from the AL Central battling it out, with the Indians playing the White Sox (19.05) and the Twins facing Gil Meche and the Royals (19.10).

Thursday – St Louis fans get a second chance to see their team live in the British evening this week in the only early game of the day. The Cardinals finish their series in Cincinnati with a tough assignment against Aaron Harang. Adam Wainwright is the probable starter for the Cards at 17.35.

Friday – No early games to start the weekend, but there are a host of important match-ups in the early hours of Saturday. The Yankees head into Boston for the first of a three-game series with Andy Pettitte scheduled to face Daisuke Matsuzaka at 00.05. The Phillies take on the Mets from 00.10, the Cubs and Cardinals begin their second series of the week an hour later and the D-Backs travel to LA to compete against David Wells and the Dodgers (03.40).
