Baseball film recommendations

We are continuing to build up a decent collection of book reviews here at BaseballGB, but I’ve been asked on a number of occasions whether we will start reviewing other products as well, such as baseball-related computer games or films.  My response has always been ‘sounds like a good idea, yet I’m not the man to do it’.  While I’ve always loved reading books, computer games and films have never really captured my imagination, so I don’t think I would be able to add much to the conversation by reviewing them.

Thankfully, Thomas has decided to take up the challenge of providing a series of baseball film reviews at his Checked Swing blog.  Strange as it may seem, films like Field of Dreams and A League of Their Own can be a great way to introduce cynical Brits to the sport, so creating a collection of reviews from a British perspective sounds like an excellent idea.  Thomas has got a number of films on his list to review, but he’s seeking further recommendations so do pass any on at his blog and check out his reviews when they are published.

Thanks for the shoutout, Matt! I’ve just posted my first review, of the Natural. I’d recommend it to Brits, fans of baseball or not, because it’s accessible and its themes transcend baseball. I’ll be posting more reviews as and when I watch more films.

This is a great idea. I would have loved to have a go at this myself, but I’m spectacularly good at missing things in films, so they would have been more Tommy Cooper than Mark Kermode.

Even just having a list of baseball-related films available to rent in the UK is very useful (many of the greats aren’t, frustratingly).

Good spot. I’ll take a look as well.
