England v Wales in a Welsh Baseball International on Saturday

by Matt Smith

WelshBBThe annual international Welsh Baseball game between England and Wales takes place this Saturday at Tredegar Park, Newport, Wales. ‘Kick off’ is scheduled for 2 p.m and a poster for the event can be found here.

Welsh baseball, also sometimes known as British baseball, is a hybrid of baseball, cricket and rounders and has been featured on BaseballGB previously.

The annual international game was first held in 1908 and it would be fair to say that the Welsh have dominated the tie in recent years.  England haven’t prevailed since 1987, with a rain-induced draw in 1998 being the only time since then that they have managed to avoid defeat.

Does that sequence mean England have no chance again this year, or do the laws of probability tell us the Welsh winning streak has to come to an end soon?

Why not head along to Newport this Saturday and find out, while taking in a truly unique sporting event that is steeped in history.  For more details about Welsh Baseball, just visit the official website.

Tredegar Park sports ground is easy to get to – just a couple of minutes from Junction 28 of the M4.
Admission is free, programmes available, and if you arrive early, there’s a junior representative match from noon.

Beautiful weather, superb venue and another win for Wales. There’s a report in today’s Wales on Sunday newspaper, and online version here:

Looking at the rules, it appears to be very similar to indoor softball.

H Zack. I don’t know of any baseball teams around the Newport area, unfortunately. The nearest thing – in location and sport – that I know of is the Cardiff Softball league. Their website might be a useful starting point, at least

Cheers

Zack,

If Bristol’s a train-ride away, would that work?
