BaseballGB Fantasy League – Week Twenty

by Mark George
BgbFantasyHeadlineWelcome to our weekly round-up of the BaseballGB Fantasy League competition.  This is a mixed Head-2-Head league involving BGB writers and readers.

There are fourteen teams who pair up in different combinations each week, making for seven match-ups in any given week. The teams battle over twelve statistical categories, gaining one point for each category they win.  All the points are carried over into the season league table at the end of the weekly match-ups. The top six teams with the most points at the end of the fantasy season will go on to the playoffs during the last three weeks of September.

SWAT were the victors in the inaugural BGB Fantasy League last year.  Will they retain their title in 2010, or will a new champion emerge?

There are just two weeks left until the BaseballGB fantasy league playoffs begin. This week saw one team book their place, but the race for the remaining slots looks like it will go right down to the wire.

We start with a big win for Beck ‘Nams as JJ books his place in the playoffs with an 11-1 win over Rip It, sweeping the offensive categories thanks to Konerko, Ichiro and Pujols. Add a very nice week from the rotation, and you have a convincing win. The injury-hit Rip It took holds thanks to Durbin.

Iron Men 24 3 21 3 0.281 0.695 2 2 35 0 3.41 1.19 3

A huge matchup between second and third saw Matt’s Chasers beat Iron Men 8-3. The Chasers got the job done with the bats, as Reyes, Gonzalez, Pence and McCutchen all had big weeks. Sabathia and Wilson helped Iron Men salvage three pitching categories.

SWAT* 19 4 21 4 0.29 0.758 5 3 71 0 3.16 1.31 2

My Isotopes picked up an 8-2 win over last year’s champions SWAT, as Cabrera, McGehee and a huge Sunday from Heyward led my hitters. A very tight pitching matchup saw little between the two teams, with Oswalt, Billingsley, Minor and Wilson racking up plenty of strikeouts, just slightly better than the efforts of Scherzer, Kershaw and Anderson.

The Wright Stuff 17 3 17 2 0.261 0.686 3 3 55 2 3.66 1.17 4

The Angels are keeping their playoff dreams alive with an 8-4 win over the Stuff, with Alexei Ramirez the pick of hitters and Nolasco and Halladay leading the pitchers. Wright, Castro and Desmond were in good form for the Stuff, but the good pitching of Santana wasn’t enough to level or take wins.

New Spaniards 38 7 34 4 0.264 0.848 1 0 20 1 5.32 1.35 5

The Sox picked up a narrow win over the Spaniards thanks to a sweep of pitching categories. Greinke led the rotation, while the bullpen of Soriano, Wuertz and Madson all contributed. Cano had a nice week for the injury-hit Spaniards.

Pretzel Vendors 28 7 30 9 0.254 0.754 5 1 56 0 2.38 0.93 10

A big win for the Vendors means they are still very much in playoff contention after defeating the Waves 10-2. A sweep of offensive categories was led by Infante, Braun and Rollins, while the pitching staff put up a sub-1.00 WHIP thanks to Buchholz and Lilly. Felix Hernandez and possible MVP Votto put up nice numbers for the Waves.

Borders Bats 25 9 32 2 0.237 0.714 0 2 19 0 6.23 1.48 4

The battle at the bottom saw Bonestalkers defeat the Bats 7-4. Headley and Cuddyer hit well for the Bats, but they couldn’t answer a great week by Longoria. A pair of wins by Moylan helped Bonestalkers take five out of six pitching categories.

Rounding things up

Beck ‘Nams are top and in the playoffs, followed by the Chasers, who are a game ahead of my Isotopes. Iron Men drop to fourth, ahead of the Sox and Stuff while the Vendors’ big win puts them just one place outside the championship playoffs. The Angels and SWAT are still battling on bravely, but the Waves’ hopes took a big dent with this week’s defeat.

This week’s fixtures are as follows:
Beck ‘Nams v Chasers (first v second!)
Isotopes v Sox
Iron Men v Stuff
Vendors v Rip It
Angels v Bats
SWAT v Waves
Spaniards v Bonestalkers

Finally, ‘my boys’ decide to play and all have a good week together. I very much doubt they will be able to keep it up, though! Even so, really enjoying this run-in and hoping I can sneak a play-off spot. Won’t be easy, though.
