BaseballGB Fantasy League – Week Twenty Five

by Mark George

BgbFantasyHeadlineWelcome to our weekly round-up of the BaseballGB Fantasy League competition.  This is a mixed Head-2-Head league involving BGB writers and readers.

There are fourteen teams who pair up in different combinations each week, making for seven match-ups in any given week. The teams battle over twelve statistical categories, gaining one point for each category they win.  All the points are carried over into the season league table at the end of the weekly match-ups.

The top six teams with the most points at the end of the fantasy season will go on to the playoffs during the last three weeks of September.

We are at the halfway stage of the final matchups of the BaseballGB fantasy league. Which teams are a week away from glory, and which teams have work to do?

CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL

R HR RBI SB AVG OPS W SV K HLD ERA WHIP Score
Weston-Super-Sox 24 10 37 4 0.291 0.862 2 1 35 3 6.69 1.44 7
Orpington Isotopes 34 8 30 3 0.281 0.835 2 0 57 2 2.66 1.03 4

The Sox are in incredible form, and are halfway to their ninth consecutive win, taking a 7-4 lead over my Isotopes in the championship final. Kev’s hitters have been getting the job done, currently ahead in five out of six categories thanks to a power surge from Granderson and Vernon Wells, while CarGo is showing no sign of slowing down. Vazquez, Greinke and Dempster have all had rough weeks, leaving my team well ahead in ERA and WHIP, although wins have been few and far between for both teams.

Oswalt, Haren and Cain have been excellent so far for my team, while Miguel Cabrera, Chris Young and Casey McGehee have done their bit to keep the offensive categories close.

The Sox are in pole position at the moment, but with more than half of the categories up for grabs, there will be a few more twists and turns before we know the final score.

THIRD PLACE PLAYOFF

R HR RBI SB AVG OPS W SV K HLD ERA WHIP Score
Pretzel Vendors 25 3 21 3 0.254 0.722 1 5 26 0 5.54 1.81 0
Beck ‘Nams (GB) 30 6 24 5 0.295 0.814 2 5 46 1 4.04 1.14 11

In the battle for third, JJ’s Beck ‘Nams currently hold an 11-0 lead and are ahead in all six offensive categories thanks to Weeks, Pujols and Ichiro. Verlander and Daniel Hudson have led the pitching staff. The Vendors’ bullpen has been effective, thanks to four saves from Lidge, and Chacin has also pitched well. Braun and Choo have both hit very well so far, but the Vendors need more from Wieters and Andrus.

Although Beck ‘Nams are in the driving seat here, there are again more than half a dozen categories up for grabs. Will we see a stunning comeback?

CONSOLATION FINAL

R HR RBI SB AVG OPS W SV K HLD ERA WHIP Score
The Cheddar Chasers 25 5 19 3 0.292 0.823 2 2 28 1 5.53 1.52 1
SWAT* 33 9 25 9 0.305 0.946 4 4 41 0 4.05 1.22 11

In the consolation final, SWAT have taken an 11-1 lead at the halfway stage, taking every category apart from holds. Stephen Drew and the incredible Jose Bautista did a lot of SWAT’s damage, with the bullpen of Soria, Capps, Uehara and Betancourt unscored upon so far. There’s still hope for the Chasers, as McCutchen and Pence have been hitting well, although rough weeks for Pavano, Jiminez and Vargas have done damage to the ERA and WHIP.

The Chasers do have some work to do to get back into this matchup, but it’s not impossible. Should the Chasers get a Tulo-type week from a hitter or two, they will be right back in the mix.

 THE BATTLE FOR NINTH

R HR RBI SB AVG OPS W SV K HLD ERA WHIP Score
stevenston angels 27 4 17 3 0.291 0.829 4 0 28 0 2.89 1.21 2
Boston Rogue Waves 24 10 26 4 0.304 0.872 3 3 39 1 2.45 1.2 10

In the battle for ninth, the Waves have the advantage at the halfway stage, leading the Angels 10-2. It has been a balanced effort for Boston so far, taking five hitting and five pitching categories. Votto (MVP!) and Johnson have done a lot of damage with the bat, while Colby Lewis and Jon Lester have put up great numbers, as has Heath Bell. Bartlett, Upton and Span have helped the Angels take the lead in runs, while Lowe, Porcello, Lackey and Halladay have each chipped in with a win.

The Angels will need a little more offense and some help from the bullpen to turn this matchup around, but with plenty of categories still winnable it can be done.
