Fingers crossed for a Verlander Thursday

by Matt Smith

There are no MLB games starting before midnight on three days this working week, but Wednesday and Thursday should provide some high quality games to enjoy.

That will particularly be the case on Thursday if the schedule doesn’t change.

The Detroit Tigers’ game against the Cleveland Indians is Justin Verlander’s next scheduled start.

He came within two outs of pitching his third no-hitter on Friday against the Pittsburgh Pirates and if rain-outs don’t jumble up the Tigers’ plans, we’ll be line to watch or listen to his follow-up performance.  Coverage on BBC 5 Live Sports Extra with Nat Coombs and Josh Chetwynd will begin at 17.00.

Wednesday also offers a good selection of games. The Baltimore Orioles have been the surprise package of the season so far and their home series against the Red Sox will be a good test of their early-season form. Wednesday’s game will be the third of the three-game series.

Ricky Romero and James Shields should make for an excellent pitching match-up at Tropicana Field, while there are also good pitchers scheduled to be on the mound in the two AL West games a little later in the evening. Log on to the ESPN America website and cast your vote if you have a preference for which of those two games you would most like to watch.

All times are in BST.
