BGB Fantasy League 2013 Week Four

The first month of the fantasy baseball season is complete. Which teams are firing on all cylinders, and which ones are yet to break out of spring training mode?

We begin with a big win for SWAT, who stay top of the pile after their 10-2 result against the Redsox. Cano, Goldscmidt and Willingham each belted a pair of homers, while Fowler and Adam Jones helped take average and OPS despite low overall team numbers. On the mound, Matt Moore won twice and struck out 18, while Anibal Sanchez’s 17-strikeout game helped make a difference in wins, Ks, ERA and WHIP. Crawford had a three-homer week for the Redsox, joining Gomez, Berkman and Jennings in scoring five runs. Melancon and Grergerson took holds with three each.

Batteries Essential were also big winners, defeating the Chasers by the same score. Ichiro hit .417 for the week, while Hunter and Rollins scored four times and Wright drove in five. Dempster, Halladay and Ryu all had good weeks on the mound, helping take strikeouts, ERA and WHIP, while Reed had three saves and Benoit collected a pair of holds. The Chasers had power from Gordon, who homered twice and joined Zobrist in driving in seven. Five different pitchers won games, with AJ Burnett the pick of the bunch.

The Riverkings are close to .500 after their 8-3 win against the RBIs thanks to an offensive sweep. Stanton had a three-homer week, scoring six and driving in eight but is now sidelined with a hamstring injury. Kershaw and Hamels combined for two wins and 31 strikeouts, while Nathan had three saves. Gio Gonzalez and Darvish each picked up a win and helped take ERA and WHIP in a well-pitched matchup, while Peralta had two holds and Harper homered twice.

Norwich rode their pitching staff to an 8-4 score against the Stuff, winning five categories on the way. Shelby Miller (15K), Cobb and Jansen all picked up wins, with Chapman and Kimbrel combining for three saves. Nelson Cruz homered twice and drove in nine, Chris Davis had a multi-homer week and Matt Carpenter scored six times. Justin Upton homered three times for the Stuff, while Lawrie went deep twice, as did the red-hot Ortiz, who helped take average and OPS. Street had three saves.

The Sox just got the better of Iron Men 7-5, taking five offensive categories. Ryan Howard homered twice and drove in 10, Miguel Cabrera hit .450 for the week and drove in eight and De Aza swiped three bases. New St Louis closer Mujica had three saves while Bailey, Fister and Kennedy helped take WHIP. Iron Men’s pitchers took four categories, with Zimmermann and Lynn two of the five pitchers with wins, while Iwakuma struck out 19. Posey, Longoria and Braun each had multi-homer weeks.

My Isotopes used an offensive sweep to defeat Beck ‘Nams 6-5, belting 14 homers in the process. Encarnacion hit five homers, Joey Bats went deep three times and Rosario and Beltran each belted a pair, while Kipnis stole three bases. League’s three saves helped force a deadlock in that category. Beck ‘Nams had a pair of wins and ridiculously good ERA and WHIP numbers from King Felix, Kelvin Herrera had the lone hold and Rizzo went deep twice.

 

The week five matchups are as follows:

Beck ‘Nams (2nd) v Riverkings (8th)

Norwich (3rd) v Iron Men (9th)

Stuff (4th) v RBIs (10th)

Batteries Essential (5th) v Sox (6th)

Thanks for the write-up, Mark. It’s been a very underwhelming start to the season for my Chasers. I’m going to stick with my guys for a few more weeks with the threat that I might need to have a bit of a shake-up if they don’t start bucking up their ideas!
