MLB this Week: Post-All Star break

by Matt Smith

CovMLBUK2014After last week’s All-Star break, we’re back into the daily diet of MLB games.

There’s a good selection of games this working week starting before midnight UK time.

We were not due to have an early game on Monday, but Sunday’s game between the Angels and Red Sox was postponed due to rain – the first such postponement in Anaheim for 20 years – and consequently the two teams are playing a double-header.

There’s another double-header on Wednesday as the Reds host the Cubs on a bumper day of early games.  On Thursday, Japanese pitchers Masahiro Tanaka and Hiashi Iwakuma will be on the mound for their respective teams, whilst the A’s Scott Kazmir is scheduled to make another pre-trading deadline audition for potential new teams.

All times are in BST.

As a Red Sox fan, I can attest the the entire season has been a washout!

It’s been a very strange run for the Red Sox, with the glory of 2013 in between two 5th placed finishes and now another disappointing season. With the resources they’ve got – and with the Yankees hardly being at their most imposing during that period – it’s been well-below expectations

I think the WS win in 2013 has bought Farrell and Cherrington another season at most. Its worth remembering that Fenway tickets are the most expensive in baseball; eventually the natives will vote with their feet – once the revenue decreases, heads will roll.

The difference between the Yankees (who also aren’t exactly setting the world alight either, whilst still leading the division) and the Red Sox is that the Yankees have put faith in experience, and stuck with the plan for a while – A-Rod, Gardner, Texiera, McCann, Ellsbury are the backbone of that ball club. The Red Sox on the other hand are in the middle of an identity crisis, in terms of being unsure whether to stick with veterans or blood youth – they traded away most of the core of the WS win, which in hindsight looks to have been a mistake. Long term you could argue that the Red Sox are in the stronger position (especially with arguably the strongest farm system in baseball, and the likes of Betts, Holt and Bogaerts yet to reach their prime) but the words ‘Red Sox Nation’ and ‘pateince’ do not generally exist in the same sentence.
