Falcons sweep Flames to set up four-way tie for first in NBL

by Joe Gray

I’ve just got back from Grovehill Ballpark, where the Herts Falcons enjoyed two 1-run victories over the Richmond Flames. The decisive run in game 1 (7-6) came in the bottom of the seventh, while the go-ahead score in game 2 (5-4) came in the sixth.

The results mean that Bracknell, Herts, London, and Richmond now sit in a four-way tie at the top of the National Baseball League (NBL). Croydon, the fifth NBL team, are five games back from the cluster.

London’s wins include four against Croydon, while Herts and Richmond have both taken two from the Pirates. Bracknell are yet to play the cellar dwellers, and therefore could be seen to have the advantage among the four tied teams.

Sounds like a great day of competitive baseball at Grovehill Ballpark. It’s a shame that the National Baseball Championship spots for the NBL already look set, with the Pirates down to miss out. Still, the NBC should be very exciting with four teams genuinely capable of winning the title.

That’s a long way off though. Plenty of baseball to enjoy before then.

You could say that Richmond gifted Herts both games with a string of fielding errors (for instance, one Herts run scored when a player stole second and then got round to home on two fielding errors).

On the other hand, you could also argue that Herts got what they deserved, and made full use of the chances Richmond gave them.

Either way, you had two shock, come-from-behind, 1-run victories. It doesn’t get any better than that.

How about those Falcons huh? They came from behind agaisnt my Mets and now Richmond. The league, although not at it’s highest standard, is highly competitive and I love it. This sunday’s gonna be cracking as we play Richmond and I reckon we’ll get em.

Yep, should be a fascinating double-header over at Finsbury Park.

Thanks for the comment Jonathon – always good to hear from someone who is actually playing in the NBL.

No doubt I think the league is becoming a lot more user friendly if that makes sense, but seriously watch out for us we just got a whole lot better. But with Mike trask coming back to bracknell and Herts becoming the comeback kings who knows!
