Mister-Baseball interviews Jason Greenberg

by Matt Smith

EC2010SmThe European Championship is almost upon, with the opening games taking place on 23 July.

In the lead-up to the event, the excellent Mister-Baseball.com website has been running a series of interviews with the General Managers of the teams involved.

The latest is with Team GB’s Jason Greenberg.  Jason discusses his hopes for the tournament, how the level of play in European baseball has changed since the last tournament in 2007 and Great Britain’s pre-tournament plans.

Mister-Baseball is also supplying English content to the official European Championship website.  The English version of the site can be found here.  If you click through to the German version you’ll see that one of the top stories is about the Great Britain roster, noting that three players on the roster (Ted Gieschen, Richard Klijn and Sam Whitehead) currently play in the German leagues and three others (Chris Falls, Will Lintern and Mitch Evans) have done so in the past.

I haven’t heard anything official about TV coverage. A check of the Eurosport schedule suggests they are showing a few games from the final four days (Thurs 29 onwards), mainly late at night.

Hello Matt Smith and Joe Gray! I have been busy with HS and All Star teams and have neglected to at least say hello. Sorry about that! My son, Logan, has a lot of colleges and universities that want his baseball services while he gets an education. Colleges from Georgia to California to NY to the Wisconsin, Minnesota,Illinois areas are recruiting him. We begin a 40 game (I’m one of the coaches) stretch with the Wisconsin All-Stars College-Pro Scout team soon. We play in NY and Rhode Island on a 10 game road trip in August and play until mid October. He graduates in June 2011, so we are going to make a decision by the fall where he will go to school. There are approximately 1,750 colleges and/or universities that have baseball programs in the U.S. Division 1, 11, 111, NAIA and Junior College are the divisions with all of them producing good teams and players who get drafted by MLB.

I am pulling for the team in the Euro Championships! Go Great Britain!!

How about my Chicago White Sox?

Hi Chico. Great to hear from you. Sounds like you’ve got an exciting road trip ahead of you. Hope it goes well and things work out well for Logan too.

Thanks for your GB support!

The White Sox have made an incredible comeback. They looked to be sure-fire deadline sellers a month ago and now they are looking at adding an extra piece or two. Tough break on Peavy though.

Matt: Logan was commenting as we looked at the GB website and roster that he might like to play someday for GB. I thought that was really neat. His Great Grandmother and Grandfather were from Leeds, as I have mentioned to you before. Wouldn’t that be something someday? He has 1 year of HS left and 4 years of college ahead. After that, who knows. Professional? Or maybe a shot at the GB team. The seed was planted today!
